Popnoname – Spaces – Pop! Records 2010

Brut! Records baby sister label, Pop!, sees its second release with Popnoname’s Spaces. An eclectic line-up, including Joerg Burger, Freund der Familie and Paid for Fame, remix the original three times over offering varied perspectives of the same brave track. Revving its engine, Spaces drives you to experience things: it invites you to crack yourself open so that some new future might pour through that voluntary rift. Bold and beautiful and formless, it emerges: a baby nebula, cradled in the spiral arms of a distant galaxy, patiently building mass as it clumps gas and dust together.

The important things often creep up unaware. Only once they arrive do you recognize them, even though you had given them no shape in your mind prior to their arrival. Space gives possibility to what these forms might be, boundless in four-dimensions. It’s that expanding medium that allows imagination to roam without end…where the need to distinguish between what you know and invented evaporates and flows pure and clear.

With Spaces, Popnoname adds an “s” to the end of this giant 5-letter word and a plurality emerges. Definition shuffles its feet and looks to the ceiling, uncertain of just whom it might be. This record examines ‘spaces’ with different dimensions and structures. It invites you to explore sonic relationships. Each artist applies a creative force to the word and a preferred geometry settles into form: one moment a handled-cup, the next a donut, a tire, a steel nut, a pipe…ever-shifting manifolds.

On the A-side, the original track is perhaps an imprint of Popnoname’s inner shape: a confident energy creating a place where rare river otters lounge on sun-warmed rocks and thick water fills your mouth when you inhale to drink. Joerg Burger’s remix follows with a poetic sprung-rhythm. Stripping away the pop and sparkle, he studies the beauty of its reduced structure: comfortable in its naked form.

The flip side offers Freund der Familie’s abstracted take. Removing the vocals, the track slowly melts away into decaying reverb. Billowing echoes subtly elongate deep belly growls and stretch your sight beyond the visible horizon until intuition emerges. Paid for Fame closes out the record by layering the excitement of live crowds over Popnoname’s strength. Mirroring the original track, it offers a reflection in a different context, with a new interpretation.

Spaces, with its uplifting sounds and expanding surfaces, offers a solid theory as to what the elusive content (that missing mass called dark matter) of the universe might be. But you’ll have to first listen and reach for the dangling string floating by, attached to a red helium balloon, allow yourself whatever transformation might unfold once you grasp hold.

【インタビュー】

─ミックスの録音環境を教えてください。

ケルンのスタジオで、まず「Pop Ambient」シリーズを全部聴いて、収録するトラック決めをしたんだ。ものすごくたくさんいいトラックがあったんだけど、結局削って削って30分くらいのミックスに仕立てたんだ。
このミックスに関してはディスクレコーダーで録音したけど、僕の作曲機材は、コンピューター、ギター、ベース、たくさんのシンセサイザー、ピアノ、それに楽器に限らず、僕がいいと思ったものすべてを使うよ！

─自身の楽曲を収録している場合、その楽曲の解説をお願いします。

「Pop Ambient 2009」に収録された「Nightliner」っていう僕の曲を収録したけど、僕自身の曲について解説するのは、むずかしいな……。多分僕のアンビエントセンスの中で、美しい時間を表現している曲だと思うよ。

─近況と最近の活動について教えてください。

今月、POPレーベルからシングルをリリースしたよ。Joerg Burger, freund der familie と paid for fameのリミックス入りで、「Space」っていうタイトルなんだ(http://popnoname.de/2010/02/06/spaces /)。あと”KOMPAKT POP”からもう１枚「Hello Gorgeous」っていうシングルをリリースするよ。こっちはTerranovaのリミックスが入っている。あとは去年リリースした僕のアルバム「Surrounded By Weather」のリミックスアルバム「Surrounded By Mars」がMatt Suzuki (Mars Gallery Tokyo)、Shinji Tokida (Plaza In Crowd / Fountain Music) とフォトグラファーのRikki Kassoからなる日本のレーベル”Fountain Music”のサブレーベル”Plaza In Crowd”から6月にリリースされるよ。これにはADA、the Field、Tennishero、Geiger & Deepulseのリミックスが収録される予定だよ。

─今後の活動予定を教えてください。

まず秋くらいにリリースを目指している「POPNONAME」としてのフルレングスアルバムの制作に取り掛かっている。あと新しく、バンドスタイルのライブセットのリハーサルをしているんだ。これはたくさんの人が驚く新しいものになるよ。 1人の人間がラップトップを使ってテクノのライブをしているんじゃないか、って思うんじゃないかな。それと”magazine”っていう名前の新しいレーベルを友人2人と始めるよ。このレーベルは”drums of chaos”のJaki Liebezeitや、”THE FIELD”のAxel Willerがアーティストとして所属するし、たくさんの新しいことをする予定だよ。レーベルのプランはケルンの音楽の歴史を紐解くことなんだ。CAN、 Stockhausen、Wolfgang Voigtなどのね。最初のリリースは5月になるかな。

I. Rich, melodic technopop tunes that sit halfway between club fare and home listening. It seems these are pleasant enough for almost every type of audience to enjoy.
II. Highlights from out electropop collection. Very likely they were designed to appeal a very specific niche with all those requisite sharp-edged, Casio-based noises and 80’s samples that make them feel like good old friends to us in the mid-twenties demographic.
III. It’s hard to think clearly when exposed to any sort of saturation of the senses. You’re being forced to trust your animal instincts. How could anyone avoid thinking about steaming sex while there’s a hazy, ethereal, swooping, swirling wall of sound coming out of the speakers? Maybe you were distracted. Try again.
IV. Yet another playlist filled with patches. After giving it some thought I think that the one thing these songs do have in common is that they incursioned in sounds which eventually became cliché; the pan-global influence, grime, electro, disco revival, hip-house. Regardless of fatigue I still remember them with fondness and it will be hard for me not to look back in a few years and realize how much these sort of songs helped define the promiscous musical environment in which I lived in for the better part of the decade.

Extatisch, minimal verdichtete Live-Musik bestehend aus Gitarre (Joe Elegant), Drums (Judie Diva), Synthesizer (Daniel Ansorge) und Gesang (Michael Heydebreck).
Gegründet 2009 in Köln von Joe Elegant. Der Sound ist mystisch und geheimnisvoll, eine anarchistische Symbiose als Navigator durch die Nacht.
Vergleichbar mit Bands wie Suicide, Joy Divison & den frühen CAN.

t0MBo (DJ)
Dj Thomas Schaeben aka t0MBo, Betreiber des berüchtigten Labels FIRM seit 10 Jahren und eine Hälfte des Duos Schaeben&Voss, durch zahlreiche Releases auf Kompakt verschrieen, legt schon seit Jahren auch seine Platten auf. Auf zahlreichen FIRM-Labelnächten sowie bei Engagements in Paris, Köln, Manama, Frankfurt, Berlin etc. brachte er bereits meist unbekannte Musik unters Volk. Seit November bespielt er einmal monatlich die neue Discothek Coco Schmitz in Köln. Sein Stil ist einfacherweise als tanzbar zu bezeichnen. Und nicht solange kochen sonst trocknet er aus.

Popnoname – Kompakt Pop Ambient Momente 2010 from R.fm at Letsmix.com.

Кельнский лейбл Kompakt в начале следующего года выпускает очередную компиляцию своей эмбиентно-чиллаутной серии.

Только относительно недавно кельнский лейбл Kompakt отпраздновал юбилейный десятый релиз одной своей известной серии “Total”, как подкралась очередная круглая цифра – десятый выпуск другой, эмбиентно-чиллаутной компиляции “Pop Ambient”. Когда серия стартовала в 2001 году, в первой ее части в основном были доморощенные музыканты, которые либо выпускались на самом Kompakt, либо имели к нему непосредственное отношение. Постепенно круг задействованных артистов стал шириться и появлялись все новые имена, либо вообще дебютанты, либо новые на кельнском лейбле. В компиляции “Pop Ambient 2010″ можно заметить возвращение исключительно к своим “воспитанникам” или клиентам. Dettinger, DJ Koze, Popnoname, Томас Фельманн (Thomas Fehlmann), и, конечно же, Вольфганг Фойгт (Wolfgang Voigt) имеют к лейблу непосредственное отношение. Из музыкантов, которые не входят в семью Kompakt, выделяется, пожалуй, проект Брока Ван Вея Bvdub, который в этом году не раз отличался своими эмбиентными работами.
“Pop Ambient 2010″ выйдет на лейбл Kompakt 18 января 2010 года.

Marcus Worgull aus Wuppertal ist einer der bekanntesten House Dj`s aus Deutschland.
Der Musikzeitschrift SPEX nach, ist er auch einer der Besten.
Er legt regelmäßig in Clubs wie Fabric (London), Panorama Bar (Berlin),
Robert Johnson (Frankfurt) auf, und produziert Musik für das Berliner Label
Innervisions, welches auch Künstler wie Ame, Dixon oder Hendrik Schwarz veröffentlicht.
In Köln leitet er seinen eigenen Schallplattenladen: Den legendären Groove Attack Store.

Jens-Uwe Beyer aka Popnoname lebt seit 2000 in Köln.
Nach einigen preisgekrönten Theatermusikproduktionen, zahlreichen Maxi-singles, sowie
Beiträgen zur Serie Popambient auf Kompakt, veröffentlichte er 2007 sein Debütalbum
White Album auf Italic, welches viel Resonanz in der internationalen Presse hervorgerufen hat.
Seit dem ist er on the Road: Allein in diesem Jahr tourte er mit seinem aktuellen Album
Surrounded by Weather (Italic) mit seinem Live-set durch Japan, Mexico, Australien und ganz Europa.
Anfang nächsten Jahres erscheint eine weitere Veröffentlichung auf Kompakt Pop.

Aktuell kuratiert Jens-Uwe Beyer im bestehenden Wuppertaler Schauspielhaus die Reihe
POPNONAME POPNOSHOW POPNOPARTY.
Er stellt dem Wuppertaler Publikum Kooperationen mit nationalen und internationalen Künstlern
aus seinem Dunstkreis vor.
Alle die das erste Konzert der Reihe am 14.11.09 gemeinsam mit Drums off Chaos,
der aktuellen Band des berühmten Trommlers Jaki Liebezeit / Can, verpasst haben,
können beruhigt sein:
